Our shortlist to our favorite family accommodation in Umbria: kid-friendly agriturismo, resort and hotels for all budgets.
The region of Umbria is one of the best and most suited in Italy for a family vacation with kids.
Located right in the center of Italy and easy to reach by car from Rome, Florence and Bologna, Umbria is a heaven of pretty towns, rolling hills, farms and adventure park and a place to savor slowly.
In a previous post, I have talked about all the best thing to do in Umbria with kids.
Today, I want to share my favorite accommodation option in Umbria!
We go to Umbria often. I am from Rome, and Umbria is an easy and fabulous destination for us for weekends away and longer stays – if you’re looking to escape the city, it’s hard to beat time in Umbria!
When we go, we usually do so as a multi-generational family and this means we have with us our kids and my parents too.
This setup informs our accommodation choices, which all tick the same boxes: comfort, cleanliness, kid-friendliness, authenticity.
The places on this page are places we have ourselves selected and stayed at with our kids and that we believe will give you a great experience.
I hope you enjoy it and it helps you plan your perfect stay!

Family accommodation in Umbria: need to know
Umbria is a rural, hilly region and country stays are among the most traditional and most pleasant places to stay.
County stays in Umbria are often called agriturismo or borgo.
Agriturismo is generic word meaning a country estate that engages in some form of agricultural production and offers rooms for guests.
These can be simple farm stays or very luxurious resorts, all under the generic umbrella of the term agriturismo
Borgo is the Italian word for a small village or more specifically a hamlet, often of medieval origin.
A borgo is usually a historic complex, originally built around a church or similar structure, that operated as a standalone unit, a castle in the most ancient sense of the word (as in: a castrum, not a palace).

Nowadays many have been fully refurbished and transformed into hospitality structure, where the charm of the original setup meets modern conveniences.
In all cases, the structures aim at offering to visitors a quiet escape from the city and the opportuniy to reconnect with nature.
Therefore, while you will see a couple of them offer activities on site, most do not. This is because activities are not a traditional offering of Italian agriturismo: for those, you usually need to look at campsites like those by HU what we call ‘villaggi’ – holiday villages’
Borgo Castello Panicaglia, Nocera Umbria
Borgo Castello Panicaglia is a stunning country resort in a beautiful part of Umbria and deserves to open this list as it has special attentions and offerings for families that make it unique.
The Borgo is a medieval hamlet developing around a castle and a church, now resorted to its former glory to be an atmospheric, welcoming and comfortable hideaways for guests.
The Borgo is a sough after wedding location, so it has that picture perfect, upscale feel of the most beautiful wedding venues Italy, yet also developed a full family package with plenty for kids to do.
here, kids find activities such as helping out in the vegetable garden, pizza making, wildlife spotting, outdoor movies and the whole family can participate in cooking classes and truffle hunting.
In terms of facilities, Borgo Castello Panicaglia has family rooms, restaurant on site and pool (seasonal).
Car is essential.
Spello (in the photo), Gubbio and several of the prettiest towns in Umbria are only a short drive away.

Borgo di Gallano
Borgo di Gallano is a stunning country resort and wedding venue, built on the ruins of an old village and now fully refurbished to offer guests the charm of a historic stay and the comfort you expect from a holiday place.

Playground and restaurant are on site, but check dates for the restaurant service as it is not always open.
This country home is pet friendly.
The beautiful pool, stone walls ans stunning views over the hills of this area make this borgo the quintessential Umbria hideaway! Car essential.
Le Mandrie di San Paolo
Le Mandrie di San Paolo is a lovely agriturismo in Umbria, immediately outside of Assisi, yet immersed in the beautiful Umbrian countryside.
This agriturismo doesn’t offer activities for kids as such but bear with me for a second as this is actually its strong point!
Rather than a country resort, Le Mandrie di San Paolo is an actual farm house, where families can get in touch with nature, its slower rhythms, the animals and where kids can have a actual authentic experience (while having the comforts of a nice rooms, pool and even restaurant on site)
The agriturismo has family rooms for up to five people, it has as outdoor pool and restaurant onsite, where they serve organic products from their own estate including their delicious olive oil. Car essential.

La Corte del Lupo, Nocera Umbra (my personal favorite!)
La Corte del Lupo is a place I am especially fond of as it pretty, quiet, offers the most amazing food you can ever dream of and has lovely owners that truly make you feel at home!
The agriturismo has lovely rooms, pool on site, small bar and offers breakfast and dinner to guests only, which means you always have a quiet and homely atmosphere.
Their food is made with meat and produce from their grounds and it is a delight: the menu is set each night but you can ask for tweaks for kids.

The agriturismo doesn’t offer activities nor a playground but the pool is lovely for kids, they have a fussball table, there is plenty of space to run around, the owner have cats and is kid friendly in atmosphere.
The house is on a hilltop which means in summer it doesn’t get as hot as properties lower down: a definite plus! Spello, Gubbio and Assisi are nearby.
We absolutely love it here and consider it perfect for those looking for an authentic and well priced stay. Car essential.
Agriturismo Le Terre del Casale
Le Terre del Casale is a fabulous agriturismo with pool and playground for kids just outside Assisi, in a beautiful and tranquil rural area.
The agriturismo has family apartments that can take up to 5 guests, a fantastic outdoor pool for summer, lots of space for kids to run around, a small playground, five a side pitch space, and patio area to relax and eat out.
It is great for kids as there is just so much space for them run and be free but is is also nice for parents as the estate is relaxing, beautiful and they produce own wines which you can of course enjoy! Car essential.
La Fornace, Assisi
La Fornace is a family friendly agriturismo only 3km outside Assisi, with lovely family accommodation and outdoor spaces that include outdoor pool and kids’ playground.
The accommodation consists of self catering apartment with kitchen and self service laundry facilities; however, it is possible to request breakfast and dinner (weekends and high season only).
The estate is perfectly located to visit Assisi but Spello, Gubbio are also easy to reach, making this a lovely base to explore. Car essential.
Fattoria Il Bruco
Fattoria il Bruco is a didactic farm, aka a farm with educational activities for kids, aimed at getting city kids acquainted with farm animals, nature and life on a real farm.
Due to this vocations, the farm is more rural in feel than the resorts on this page and is best suited to families who want to prioritize contact with animals, local feel and the opportunity to potentially meet local kids.
In terms of hospitality offering, the farm has lovely family rooms for up to 4 people, lovely wide garden and a lovely pool. Car essential.

The estate has a large garden, pool for adults and kids and a cute small playground for littles. Car essential.
Chocohotel Perugia
Chocohotel Perugia is very different from all other properties on this page as it not a country home but a city hotel located in Perugia town itself, and more of a novelty type of stay, rather than accommodation for an extended stay.
As the name suggests, it is indeed a chocolate themed hotel!
The chocolate idea is a fun concept for kids and if you love chocolate, it really is hard to beat! As well as chocolate themed rooms, you have here a very serious chocolate buffet breakfast and even a chocolate themed breakfast treasure hunt for kids on selected weekends.
The hotel has a great outdoor pool (seasonal)
Good to know: you can partake of their choco-breakfast even as a non guest (pay as you go)!
