Outdoor and Indoor attractions for kids in Florence they’ll love

A children-approved selection of fun outdoor and indoor attractions for kids in Florence, perfect for a rainy day or when you need a break from sightseeing. Updated Nov. 2024

Florence is a fantastic city to visit with kids and there are many ways to make its famous art come to life and become accessible for children.

However, sometimes kids just need to play and take a break from art, tours, and educational activities, no matter how fun they are (and some are super fun! Find here >>> my guide to Florence with kids, with all the best activities I recommend).

Thankfully, Florence has much more than traditional museums to keep kids busy. In this post, I list our favorite kids’ attractions in Florence we use to balance our days.

Since we spoke before about swimming pools in Florence for summer and day trips from the city, perfect to break the heat in summer while staying outside, today I focus on indoor attractions and places to escape the rain, perfect for a rainy day in Florence or anyway need time indoor!

New! My ‘Best of Florence with kids – practical travel guide for parents‘ is now available on Amazon! You can download it on your mobile phone and use it while on the go in Florence to find these child-friendly spots and much more (restaurants, playgrounds, kids classes, tours….)

Our favorite kids’ attractions in Florence for kids for a rainy day

Selfie Museum (a great rainy day activity for all ages!)

The Selfie Museum is a recently opened fun and colorful museum perfect for kids of all ages. The museum has an obvious appeal to tweens and teens, who may embrace the selfie-taking part of it.

However, it is so colorful and dreamy it is also great for a younger crowd!

If you can, plan to go when local kids are in school (during the week, before 4.30pm during the school year), to limit crowds.

Museum of Illusions (Museo delle Illusioni) Florence

The Museum of Illusions in Florence is similar in concept to the Illusions Museums you also have in other cities such as Rome, Naples, Brussels etc yet different enough to make a visit worth it even if you’ve been to others!

Here, you will challenge your eyesight, balance and perception of reality in a cool and unexpected way: make sure you bring a camera as you come out with unbelievable photos (your child climbing on a ceiling type of unbelievable!).

I find this museum most fun for kids of primary school age and up but it is also cute for toddlers: they will not get as much out of it but it’s a good refuge for a rainy day nonetheless (it’s kind of fun for grown-ups too)

Leonardo Interactive Museum

The Leonardo Interactive Museum is true to its name and is the most interactive of the Leonardo museums in Florence.

Here, adults and kids can touch an operate machines by Leonardo da Vinci – lots of levers to pull, shepherds to roll, and bridges to build make for a fun and educational stop.

The museum has info panels about Leonardo so you can make the visit as much or as little educational as your kids need.

My kids enjoyed it for about 6 and up, but it can work for younger ones, too, as some of the machines are easy to operate and can keep them busy with their novelty factor.

Bebilandia Scandicci

Bebilandia Scandicci indoor playground (small kids)
An indoor playground and kids’ party venue popular with local families in Scandicci (outside the city center). Contact them on Facebook before going https://www.facebook.com/babilandiapark/

Mondobimbo play park

Mondobimbo play park
is a large game area popular with local families also for birthday parties and indoor play, it has inflatables, climbing frames, carousel etc. Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/parcodivertimenti.mondobimbogroup/?locale=it_IT

HZero model railway

I have a Thomas The Tank Engine lover in my household and if you do too, then you may love to bring them to see the model railway at HZero!

The railway is cool to see for little ones but the type of attractions parents love too as it is surprising and fun

Info and tickets here >>> https://www.hzero.com/en/museum/model-railway

Biblioteca della Oblate (Fab for toddlers)

Bilbioteca delle Oblate is a public library that is great for little kids as it has a large area just for them.

When you need somewhere indoors to let a little one tot around, have story time or just take a break from the busy city streets, this is a great place! It also has a cafe’.

Address: Via dell’ Oriuolo, 24, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy

More fun things to do in Florence with kids to break up sightseeing

As well as attractions as such, Florence has many things kids can spot and enjoy while exploring and do not need planning or much time at all.

Carousel in Piazza della Repubblica

The carousel in Piazza della Repubblica is an institution in Florence and one of the easiest ways to entertain kids of all ages in Florence’s city center.

The carousel is historic, cute, and ticketed (you pay for your ride there and then) and it is in a beautiful and lively square that often also hosts street performers. A great place for a kid-friendly stop!

Top tip! La Rinascente department store overlooking the square has clean and family-friendly restrooms!

Address: Piazza della Repubblica, Florence

Lego Store

No introduction needed for this one!

The address is: Via dei Calzaiuoli, 67R/71R, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy

Candy stores and colorful stores for a quick break

Candy stored and knick-knack stores are good places for puttering around candy and get a little treat for your patient museum explorer.

Some they may like, in the city center, are:

Captain Candy (candies and sweets), Address: Via dei Calzaiuoli, 42, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy

Candy Lisa (candies and sweets), Borgo S. Lorenzo, 9, 50123 Firenze

Pylones (novelty items, colorful gifts) Address: Via dei Calzaiuoli, 58, 50122 Firenze

Venchi’s chocolate waterfall (a great gelato and crepe spot too!)

This is not a kids’ attraction as such, yet, my children always love to see it and it is a cool thing to get them to look for (that’s why I have it in my Florence kids’ scavenger hunt!)

Venchi is a famous chocolate store and their main shop in Florence city center has a whole wall covered by a chocolate waterfall. Fun to see and you can reward all the walking with gelato!

Address: Via dei Calzaiuoli, 65/R, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy

Children bookstore

We love stopping in bookshops while exploring cities and Florence has some cute one. One we like is called Todo Modo di La’ in Oltrarno. Worth looking for it!

Address: Via dei Serragli, 18 rosso, 50124 Firenze FI, Italy

Piglet Fountain

The Piglet Fountain, or Fontana del Porcellino, in Italian is a cure little fountain in a Florentine market and it is free to see and fun for kids.

Fontana del Porcellino Piglet's fountain Florence

The fountain has the shape of a big wild boar (definitely not a cute pink piglet, despite the name!), and it is peculiar plus hides a secret: if you get a coin, make it slide on its tongue and fall into the groove on the ground…. you’ll have good luck!

This is a cute, quick stop for kids. Unfortunately, it has become known, so now you have Instagrammers here, which means what used to be an easy and cute stop now sometimes comes with a long line. if you are lucky and don’t have to queue though, it is still a fun thing to spot!

Address: Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, 50123 Firenze FI, Italy

Good to know! The fountain is in a small leather market, great for snooping around leather bags and get a leather souvenir!

Swimming pools in Florence and waterparks

In the summer months (usually mid-June to mid-September), a cool and fun way to spend the day in Florence is treating the kids to time at the pool.

Nice family friendly swimming pools in Florence with day passes are:

Le Pavoniere, lovely and within beautiful Parco delle Cascine. Address: Viale della Catena, 2, 50144 Firenze FI

Piscina Costoli, sport center type of pool, with an olympic pool but also a shallow one for toddlers and young kids. Address >> Piazza Enrico Berlinguer, 2, 50137

Hydron water Park and pools (slides, pools etc), outside of the center, in Campi Bisenzio. Address>> Via di Gramignano, snc, 50013 Campi Bisenzio FI, Italy

I hope you enjoyed this quick selection of fun places for kids in Florence! Have fun exploring!
