Where to stay in Tuscany with kids: our list
The most common types of family accommodation in Tuscany are:
Agriturismo: aka farm stays. Agriturismo are farms / agricultural production estates with hospitality services such as rooms and (sometimes) a restaurants.
Agriturismo come in all shapes, sized and levels of comfort and traditionally they are place to unwind and get back in touch with the rhythm of nature.
They are one of the best places to stay in Tuscany with kids as there is plenty of space to run around, sometimes animals and pools. You can usually choose between places with breakfast and dinner or self catering option. To stay in Agriturismo you usually need a car as they are outside of towns / cities.
Need to know: agriturismo are not traditionally places for activities, they are rather the opposite. With very few exceptions that I mention below, agriturismo do not offer long lists of kids activities and entertainment : for that, in Italy you need to look for campsites and holiday villages instead (see below).
Agriturismo I love are:
Agriturismo Diacceroni – this is a very special place as it is the ONE agriturusimo that has both a traditional hospitality feel AND a vast array of activities for kids ranging from horse riding to cooking, pizza making, truffle hunting and more.
From here, you can easily reach Volterra, Lucca, Pisa, the coast and even Cinque Terre.
The agriturismo has several accommodation options and is budget friendly; while not luxurious, it has all you need and kids love it. This is the best place to stay in Tuscany with kids if you want to stay in the country, the ability to meet other families yet also a secluded place to retreat to when you need quiet time. Car needed. Book here.
Agriturismo al Gelso Bianco – this is a fantastic agriturismo / relais that specialises in welcoming families with kids.
The relais is in an lovely country setting, has a wonderful pool, has a vineyard and is very well equipped also to for families with babies and toddlers. The feel is upscale and wonderful. The position is ideal to explore the more beautiful and typical landscapes of Tuscany and places like San Gimignano, Siena, Lucca and even Val d’Orcia. Some activities such as cooking classes are available on site. Car needed. Book here.
Agriturismo Terre di Nano – Terre di Nano is a wonderful agriturismo and wedding venue neat Montepulciano and Pienza, maybe the most beautiful part of the Tuscany countryside.
You know the views of golden hills and cypress trees? This is where they are!
Terre di Nano offers beautiful accommodation overlooking a stunning vineyard, you have self catering facilities but can also avail of the excellent breakfast and dinner on site, it has a pool and it is a little piece of heaven.
Kids have plenty of space to run around, the property has chickens and a donkey and a plenty of space for running around. The feel is upscale yet family friendly, the places is spotless. We stayed here with kids and grandparents and all generations were super happy and well catered for! Car needed. Book here.
Agriturismo Tenuta Chiudendone – Agriturismo Tenuta Chiudendone differs from others on this list as they do not have meal options on site and it therefore suited to families who are looking for a self caterign option yet with all the charm of the agriturismo experience.
The Tenuta is on top of a hill, it has vast areas for kid to run around, garden games, a pool and something special: it is an actual family home!
While you get accommodation that is just for yourself, the family actually lives beside you which means you have help on hand no matter what you may need and a real local experience.
Also, they are lovely! After staying with them, we are proud to call Isabella and Francesco our friends!
The place is upscale and spotless: they will show you their vineyards, olive trees, you can go truffle hunting with them and they also have a wonderful farm to table experience with cooking that is perfect for families. Car needed. Book here (tell Isabella and Francesco that Marta sent you!)

Villas / Airbnbs / Rentals
Since Tuscany is so rural, villas and rentals in general are a popular choice for families since they offer space, a traditional type of accommodation for that perfect Tuscan feel yet they leave you the freedom to be completely independent and secluded, should you book one just for yourself.
For a private stay for a large group you may like Sole del Chianti, which several accommodation options to be together yet with personal space.
The villa has a pool, wonderful views, it is 2km walking distance from Tavarnelle Val di Pesa town (it is so rare to find a country stay so close to a town!) and the owners can arrange private chefs and cooking classes on site – ask in advance.
If you prefer self catering apartments in a villa setting, Tenuta Chiudendone, Podere Lavacchio, and Podere Spedalone are exceptional.
Campsites / holiday villages
Campsites and holiday villages are the best place to stay in Tuscany with kids if you are looking for plenty of kids entertainment, activities, pool and the chance of meeting many other kids, both local and from abroad.
Campsites in Tuscany have cabins and holiday homes or bungalows so you do not need to pack your tend to travel with much luggage at all as everything is provided for you.
Excellent Tuscany campsites for families are:

Best castle stays in Tuscany for families
Tuscany has some lovely castles that have now been transformed into hotels!
Some we recommend are:
Castello di Meleto – this is a lovely castles with a family room in the castle tower, a lovely swimming pool with kids inflatable toys and a delicious country restaurant five minutes walk, at the bottom of the hill, within the estate.
This is a fantastic place for a special one night stay: you can have wine tasting onsite, the kids can play in the pool and the food at the restaurant is top. My kids adored that the bathroom is in the old tower and is therefore round! Car needed. Book here.
Castello di Gabbiano is a lovely and atmospheric castle in Chianti with rooms and apartments for guests.

A good one is Resort Capalbio: located in a stunning area of Southern Tuscany, close to beaches and hilltop towns, the resort has family rooms, pool, play area and sports pitches and restaurant on site.
